Am I up to date with my Training and Assessment qualification?

The first question that we need to clarify is what do I need to hold to be able to be a Vocational Trainer and Assessor that fulfils the legal requirements and allows me to train and assess adult learners in the VET System?

PLEASE NOTE: The revised Standards (for Trainers) will come into full regulatory effect from 1 July 2025.
The Standards for Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) 2015 will apply until then. (Stay Tuned)
The revised Standards provide a clearer and more direct link between the requirements RTOs
(and their trainers)are expected to meet and the outcomes they are expected to deliver.
Until then if you have the following you can Train and Assess in the VET System.

To be entitled to work as a trainer in the VET sector a trainer must hold a minimum of the TAE40110 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment from the TAE10 Training and Education Training Package (or its successor – the TAE40116) (or) be able to demonstrate equivalence of competencies as a minimum. See below section taken from the Standards for Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) Amendment & www.education.gov.au website. This also means now that before an individual can commence or continue training activities they must complete (or) upgrade their previous training qualification(s) if they currently hold the superseded BSZ40198 (or) TAE40104 qualifications.

Q: What are the requirements from 1 July 2019 for trainers and assessors?

This means that anyone wishing (or) currently delivering training and assessment (formally) must ensure that;

From 1 July 2019, to be compliant with the Standards all trainers and assessors must have:

  • the TAE40116 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, OR
  • the TAE40110 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, plus:
  • either TAELLN411 Address adult language, literacy and numeracy skills,
  • or its successor, or TAELLN401A Address adult language, literacy and numeracy skills, and
  • either TAEASS502 Design and Develop Assessment Tools, or its successor,
  • or TAEASS502A Design and Develop Assessment Tools, or
  • TAEASS502B Design and Develop Assessment Tools, OR
  • a diploma or higher level qualification in adult education.

Some trainers and assessors who hold the TAE40110 may have completed one or more of the relevant units as electives or as part of ongoing professional development. If trainers and assessors do not currently hold the relevant units, they will need to complete them before 1 July 2019 to meet the new requirements.
